Delightfully readable and full of helpful and sensible advice. This is the book I've been waiting for all my writing life.

Cathy Bryant "I've won fourteen writing competitions recently, and been runner-up in countless others. I received £300 ($457) for a poem that took me a couple of hours to research and another couple of hours to write, and $250 (£164) for a single sentence of fiction. For a 100-word story, I was sent £350 ($533) and a hamper of breakfast goodies. For a single sentence, I won a trip to Italy. Bundles and boxes of books and other prizes have weighed down my postwoman, and the publicity following one of my wins (that publicity including a radio interview to 700,000 people) sent sales of my first book soaring into profit. It happened for me, and if you use all the information in this book then there's a good chance that it can happen for you too."
How to Win Writing Competitions (and Make Money) does exactly what it says on the tin — multiple award-winning poet, short story writer, novelist and brains behind the popular Comps and Calls website Cathy Bryant explains the techniques and tricks that can be used to build-up a collection of writing awards. And aside from the actual rewards you get, including cash, winning competitions can lead to significant career opportunities. 130 page paperback. ISBN 978-0-9565819-5-2

This book is very short, and its advice can be summed up with one sentence: Edit, edit, and edit again ... and then submit your work. This is the jist of the entire book. She does not, for example, go into what a short list is or even what a report is. A much better book on the topic of winning contests is A Quick Guide to Winning Writing Contests by La Barbera or Write Ways to Win Writing Contests by John Howard Reid.Product details

How to Win Writing Competitions and Make Money Cathy Bryant 9780956581952 Books Reviews
Fun and practical. Best used in conjunction with her website.
What a gem this little book is. In 121 printed pages, it fits in probably everything you could want to know about writing competitions. The writing is clear and the advice invaluable.
The fact that it took me some time to read this book is in no way a negative reflection on it. I spent the time doing the exercises, which give you some wonderful ideas of what to write.
If you're serious about winning writing competitions, I can't recommend this book enough.
A no nonsense how to book that tells in plain language how to be successful in winning writing competitions. A must for a novice writer or a writer who wants capital.
Common sense advice and writing that is easy to follow. In the end, it was worth the read, but wasn't really revelatory by any means. The proof will be if I win any contests, ha ha. B-.
I liked this book because it was straightforward and easy to read. That's not "damning with faint praise"! Cathy Bryant's style is exactly what a reader needs. If you're serious about the topic then this is a boom well worth considering. In fact, I'd happily recommend it. CB's advice is sound, sensible and above all doable. I'm looking forward to getting into it in practice!
As editor of FundsforWriters, I'm a huge advocate of writers entering solid contests. Cathy Bryant is seasoned at competitions, and her advice is worthy of reading. Such a book is a great tool in any writer's toolbox, because I believe in all serious writers taking competitions seriously. Nice job.
This short little how-to book is fairly informative. It's small enough to fit in a medium-sized shoulder bag or perhaps a large pocket, and my work locker. I haven't won any competitions yet, but I think I'll give it a go. There are plenty of tips inside to make the leap of faith in your writing career easier.
